5 Signs Your Brake Pads Need Replacing Right Now

Your brakes are the single most important safety system on your car. And yet, brake pad wear is one of the most commonly ignored maintenance items — often because the warning signs are subtle at first. Here are the five signs you should never ignore.

Modern brake pads include a small metal wear indicator that produces a high-pitched squeal when the pad wears down to roughly 2–3 mm. If you hear squealing when you press the brake pedal, your pads are telling you they're almost done.

If you've ignored the squeal and now hear a grinding sound, the pad material is completely gone and the metal backing plate is directly contacting the rotor. This is actively damaging your rotors, which are far more expensive to replace than pads — stop driving and get to a workshop immediately.

Pulsation or vibration through the brake pedal when stopping usually indicates warped rotors, often caused by overheated, worn brake pads transferring uneven heat to the rotor surface.

If your car drifts left or right during braking, one brake pad may have worn faster than the other, causing uneven braking force. This can also indicate a stuck caliper — have both pads on the axle replaced together and get the caliper checked.

You can often see your brake pads through the wheel spokes. If the pad material looks less than 5 mm thick, it's time to replace them before any warning sounds begin.

As a rule of thumb: city driving wears pads every 25,000–40,000 km, highway driving stretches that to 50,000–70,000 km. The bottom line — don't wait for grinding. When you hear the squeal, act within the week.
